Hi guys I will be 55 this may. I have been living with aids since 1990, hiv+ in 1985. I am getting to that age when many men go bald but I still have a good head of hair on my head . I have decided to donate it to "Locks or Love." before I am terminal or befroe I cut it again. I had forgotten the way in which people especially other gay men, look at me with my long hair....almost in fear. It could also be my big, thick , long bushy, salt n' pepper beard that does it too. It is truly amazing how many people feel obligated to tell me whaat I should do with my long beard. How to trim it, or straighten it so it isn't so curly, how I need to shape it.... and on it goes. I did nearly get it wound into a ceramic piece I was making on the wheel, so now I tuck.... it into my shirt. Anyway it is nearly a year since my first post on here, so this is an upsate of sorts. I have come to feel that longhair is a state of mind as much as it is in fact length. Anyone who has hair any longer than the typical gay short, clean cut look is a long hair and probably gets never ending opinions on how or why he should get his hair cut, or trimmed or whatever. I am letting it grow and loving playing with it. I allow others to play with it as well. Some folks seem mesmerized by my full . long beard. a complete stranger will walk up and ask if they can touch my beard! I don't find it annoying in the least, in fact I find it a bit humouous...
A little anecdote for ya'll. A few years ago I shaved everything off, shaved head and face... I then shaved daily for a year and kept the hair well groomed. I was certainly no happier then than now, and not getting anymore dates then than now either. What did change was this... Nearly ANY store I went into employees would walk up to me and ask if I needed assistance. NOW... they turn down the first aisle they can to avoid me!!! Life is soooo much fun!! I hope everyone is living life to the fullest. I will be making the journey to Breitenbush hot springs for teh Radical Faereis summer gathering in Southern Orebgon again this August. Any other longhairs coming? Big Hugs all around, Rick

I am passing this on:

PLEASE PLEASE HELP....HE HAS GIVEN US ALL SO MUCH...

Subject: Ram Dass

Please read it over, and if you are so moved, respond to Dr. Wayne
Dyer's request.

BE HERE for him, NOW drwaynedyer.com/articles/

One of the truly great men of our time needs our help. I write these
words to encourage your generosity and support. Back in the 1960's a
Harvard professor named Richard Alpert left behind the hectic world
of academia and business and traveled to India- there he was to meet
his spiritual teacher who gave him a new purpose to fulfill along with a
new name. He is of course Ram Dass.

His guru told him love everyone, feed people and see God everywhere.
Ram Dass became a person who lived out this mandate - he did what so
many of us could only dream. He connected to his spirit and devoted his
life to serving others.

In 1969 he wrote and published the signature book on spirituality
and applied higher awareness, Be Here Now. In keeping with his
commitment to love everyone and feed people, he donated all of the royalties
and profits to a foundation that did, and does just that. With millions
of dollars at stake, Ram Dass simply chose to live his life as a man of
service to God. After years spent in India in pursuit of a higher more
enlightened consciousness for himself and for our troubled world, he
returned to the United States to lecture throughout the country. He
spoke to packed venues wherever he went, and as always he donated
the proceeds to such causes as would keep him in harmony with his
mandate to serve. He co-founded the Seva Foundation ( www.seva.org )
where all of the monies were earmarked to fulfill his mission. Ram Dass and his
writing and lecture fees were the primary sources for this inspirational work.

To me Ram Dass was and is the finest speaker I have ever heard, period!
He was my role model on stage; always gentle and kind, always
speaking without notes from his heart, sharing his inspiring stories and
always with great humor. I tell you this from my own heart; I could listen
to his lectures for hours and always felt saddened when they would end.
He was the voice for Applied Spirituality - his life was the model. When he was
threatened by having his own private sexual preference exposed, in a time when a
closet was the only place that was even mildly safe, Ram Dass called a press
conference and proudly announced his preference to the world. He is a hero to
everyone who ever lived in fear of any kind of spiteful exposure. He paved the way
for tolerance and love when no one else would dare to do so. Most of us could only
dream of defying the conventional life and living out our inner callings to promote a
cause that was bigger than our own lives - to leave the security of a
guaranteed career - to leave a country where comfort was ensured; all to live in a
foreign land with few conveniences, traveling and meditating for a more peaceful
world. It is what St. Francis did in the 13th century and what Ram Dass did in our
lifetime.

When Ram Dass' own father, who had largely criticized his son's passion as well as
his unconventional lifestyle, was close to death, Ram Dass devoted himself to 100%
service in those final years. He fed his father, he bathed his father, he placed him on
and off the toilet until the day he died. Why? Because he felt this was his mandate. He
wanted to experience true service on a 24/7 basis and know firsthand the joy that
comes from giving one's own life away in the service of others.
Always, for over 30 years, Ram Dass was in the service of others.

In 1997 Ram Dass was struck by a semi-paralyzing stroke and was forced to live in a
wheelchair. Still he wrote of his adventure in a powerful book titled, Still Here. He
continued to travel, though he could no longer walk, and continued to speak to
audiences, though he spoke from a slowed down body but still he did it to serve
others.

Now it is our turn... Ram Dass' body can no longer endure the rigors of travel. He has
come to Maui, where I live and write. I speak with him frequently and I am often
humbled by the tears in his beautiful 73-year-old eyes as he apologizes for not having
prepared for his own elderly health care - for what he now perceives as burdensome to
others. He still intends to write and teach; however without the travel - we can now
come to Maui's healing - Maui is where Ram Dass wishes to stay for now! He is
currently living in a home on Maui, which he doesn't own and is currently in jeopardy
of losing.
I am asking all of you to help purchase this home and to set up a financial foundation
to take care of this man who has raised so much money to ensure the futures of so
many others. No one is more deserving of our love and financial support. In the end
these donations will help ensure that Ram Dass and his work will reach another
generation or remind a current generation that it is in giving that we receive.

If there has ever been a great spirit who lived in our lifetime, literally devoting his life
to the highest principles of spirit, it has been Ram Dass. I love this man; he has been
my inspiration and the inspiration for millions of us. It is now time to show him how
we feel by doing what he has taught all of us to do - Just , BE HERE for him, NOW.

Please send your donations to: Ram Dass c/o Hay House P.O. Box 5100 Carlsbad, CA 92018

In love and light,
(signed) Wayne Dyer

Lesbians sentenced for self-defense
All-white jury convicts Black women

By Imani Henry
New York

Published Jun 21, 2007 2:58 AM
On June 14, four African-American women—Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24)—received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them—all because they are lesbians.

The mere fact that any victim of a bigoted attack would be arrested, jailed and then convicted for self-defense is an outrage. But the length of prison time given further demonstrates the highly political nature of this case and just how racist, misogynistic, anti-gay, anti-youth and anti-worker the so-called U.S. justice system truly is.

The description of the events, reported below, is based on written statements by a community organization (FIERCE) that has made a call to action to defend the four women, verbal accounts from court observers and evidence from a surveillance camera.

The attack

On Aug. 16, 2006, seven young, African-American, lesbian-identified friends were walking in the West Village. The Village is a historic center for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) communities, and is seen as a safe haven for working-class LGBT youth, especially youth of color.

As they passed the Independent Film Cinema, 29-year-old Dwayne Buckle, an African-American vendor selling DVDs, sexually propositioned one of the women. They rebuffed his advances and kept walking.

“I’ll f— you straight, sweetheart!” Buckle shouted. A video camera from a nearby store shows the women walking away. He followed them, all the while hurling anti-lesbian slurs, grabbing his genitals and making explicitly obscene remarks. The women finally stopped and confronted him. A heated argument ensued. Buckle spat in the face of one of the women and threw his lit cigarette at them, escalating the verbal attack into a physical one.

Buckle is seen on the video grabbing and pulling out large patches of hair from one of the young women. When Buckle ended up on top of one of the women, choking her, Johnson pulled a small steak knife out of her purse. She aimed for his arm to stop him from killing her friend.

The video captures two men finally running over to help the women and beating Buckle. At some point he was stabbed in the abdomen. The women were already walking away across the street by the time the police arrived.

Buckle was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. When asked at the hospital, he responded at least twice that men had attacked him.

There was no evidence that Johnson’s kitchen knife was the weapon that penetrated his abdomen, nor was there any blood visible on it. In fact, there was never any forensics testing done on her knife. On the night they were arrested, the police told the women that there would be a search by the New York Police Department for the two men—which to date has not happened.

After almost a year of trial, four of the seven were convicted in April. Johnson was sentenced to 11 years on June 14.

Even with Buckle’s admission and the video footage proving that he instigated this anti-gay attack, the women were relentlessly demonized in the press, had trumped-up felony charges levied against them, and were subsequently given long sentences in order to send a clear resounding message—that self-defense is a crime and no one should dare to fight back.

Political backdrop of the case

Why were these young women used as an example? At stake are the billions of dollars in tourism and real estate development involved in the continued gentrification of the West Village. This particular incident happened near the Washington Square area—home of New York University, one of most expensive private colleges in the country and one of the biggest employers and landlords in New York City. The New York Times reported that Justice Edward J. McLaughlin used his sentencing speech to comment on “how New York welcomes tourists.” (June 17)

The Village is also the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, the three-day street battle against the NYPD that, along with the Compton Cafeteria “Riots” in California, helped launch the modern-day LGBT liberation movement in 1969. The Manhattan LGBT Pride march, one of the biggest demonstrations of LGBT peoples in the world, ends near the Christopher Street Piers in the Village, which have been the historical “hangout” and home for working-class trans and LGBT youth in New York City for decades.

Because of growing gentrification in recent years, young people of color, homeless and transgender communities, LGBT and straight, have faced curfews and brutality by police sanctioned by the West Village community board and politicians. On Oct. 31, 2006, police officers from the NYPD’s 6th Precinct indiscriminately beat and arrested several people of color in sweeps on Christopher Street after the Halloween parade.

Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in anti-LGBT violence in the area, with bashers going there with that purpose in mind.

For trans people and LGBT youth of color, who statistically experience higher amounts of bigoted violence, the impact of the gentrification has been severe. As their once-safe haven is encroached on by real estate developers, the new white and majority heterosexual residents of the West Village then call in the state to brutalize them.

For the last six years the political LGBT youth group FIERCE has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people “to counter the displacement and criminalization of LGBTSTQ [lesbian, gay, bi, two spirit, trans, and queer] youth of color and homeless youth at the Christopher Street Pier and in Manhattan’s West Village.” (www.fiercenyc.org) FIERCE has also been the lead organization supporting the Jersey Seven and their families.

The trial and the media

Deemed a so-called “hate crime” against a straight man, every possible racist, anti-woman, anti-LGBT and anti-youth tactic was used by the entire state apparatus and media. Everything from the fact that they lived outside of New York, in the working-class majority Black city of Newark, N.J., to their gender expressions and body structures were twisted and dehumanized in the public eye and to the jury.

According to court observers, McLaughlin stated throughout the trial that he had no sympathy for these women. The jury, although they were all women, were all white. All witnesses for the district attorney were white men, except for one Black male who had several felony charges.

Court observers report that the defense attorneys had to put enormous effort into simply convincing the jury that they were “average women” who had planned to just hang out together that night. Some jurists asked why they were in the Village if they were from New Jersey. The DA brought up whether they could afford to hang out there—raising the issue of who has the right to be there in the first place.

The Daily News reporting was relentless in its racist anti-lesbian misogyny, portraying Buckle as a “filmmaker” and “sound engineer” preyed upon by a “lesbian wolf pack” (April 19) and a “gang of angry lesbians.” (April 13)

Everyone has been socialized by cultural archetypes of what it means to be a “man” or “masculine” and “woman” or “feminine.” Gender identity/expression is the way each indivdual chooses or not to express gender in their everyday lives, including how they dress, walk, talk, etc. Transgender people and other gender non-conforming people face oppression based on their gender expression/identity.

The only pictures shown in the Daily News were of the more masculine-appearing women. One of the most despiciable headlines in the Daily News, “‘I’m a man!’ lesbian growled during fight,” (April 13) was targeted against Renata Hill, who was taunted by Buckle because of her masculinity.

Ironically, Johnson, who was singled out by the judge as the “ringleader,” is the more feminine of the four. According to the New York Times, in his sentencing remarks, “Justice McLaughlin scoffed at the assertion made by ... Johnson, that she carried a knife because she was just 4-foot-11 and 95 pounds, worked nights and lived in a dangerous neighborhood.” He quoted the nursery rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” (June 15)

All of the seven women knew and went to school with Sakia Gunn, a 19-year-old butch lesbian who was stabbed to death in Newark, N.J., in May 2003. Paralleling the present case, Gunn was out with three of her friends when a man made sexual advances to one of the women. When she replied that she was a lesbian and not interested, he attacked them. Gunn fought back and was stabbed to death.

“You can’t help but wonder that if Sakia Gunn had a weapon, would she be in jail right now?” Bran Fenner, a founding member and co-executive director of FIERCE, told Workers World. “If we don’t have the right to self-defense, how are we supposed to survive?”

National call to action

While racist killer cops continue to go without indictment and anti-immigrant paramilitary groups like the Minutemen are on the rise in the U.S., The Jersey Four sit behind bars for simply defending themselves against a bigot who attacked them in the Village.

Capitalism at its very core is a racist, sexist, anti-LGBT system, sanctioning state violence through cops, courts and its so-called laws. The case of the Jersey Four gives more legal precedence for bigoted violence to go unchallenged. The ruling class saw this case as a political one; FIERCE and other groups believe the entire progressive movement should as well.

Fenner said, “We are organizing in the hope that this wakes up all oppressed people and sparks a huge, broad campaign to demand freedom for the Jersey Four.”

FIERCE is asking for assistance for these young women, including pro-bono legal support, media contacts and writers, pen pals, financial support, and diverse organizational support. For details, visit www.fiercenyc.org.

Just a reminder that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence anniversary party is coming up next Sunday, April 8 (Easter) at Mission Dolores Park in San Francisco. Among the events is the Hunky Jesus contest where you can win a valuable prize if the judges believe you can fulfill the image of Jesus for the coming year. Last year pogosticking Jesus Roky Roulette won (he was carrying a cross and pogosticking onstage). One year the winner didn't even have long or even longish hair.

In the interests of having a hunky Jesus who at least looks the part, long hair and all, I'm reminding everybody to tell their friends about the contest and the anniversary party this coming Sunday.

Well, I finally did it. After a year and a half of fighting illness, I am newly shorn. At the risk of using this post as a confessional, I am a bit nervous about this physical transition. I am, of course, the same Me under long or short locks. But I wore a hat everyday for the past year, for ease and laziness sake. My hair had thinned dramatically over the duration of illness, and I wanted to let that all go. So , I connected with a friend of mine, a hairdresser like me, and she and I cut each other's hair. I have known her for 15 years and she has gracefully helped me navigate many other of my Life's transitions. I am glad she was behind for this one, too.
But now I'm dealing with people's reactions to this change. I feel no less "alternative" or "hippy". Even as I have cut off my hair, I am planning out more tattoos for my body, and I have been stretching my ear lobes quite a bit larger. I find it odd that most people seem nonplussed about all this, but the hair cut seems to be a marker of some sort, of an importance not know to me.
Perhaps I actually DO know, and just don't agree. I've been a hairstylist for 20 years. I started as a teenager. I've made it my life's work to respect people for their own merits and help them shine in a new light, if only to themselves. As simple thing as a haircut can be, in some circumstances, a very powerful doorway to walk through. I hope I don't seem dismissive of this power. But really, it was just a fucking hair cut. Yet I worry that the guys who liked me with long hair hair, however straggly it was, won't like the look of the Pan-haired me. Cuz I've the kind of curly haired that Pan and satyrs are depicted with in classical sculpture and painting. Which is part of why I cut it. I was sick of feeling that I could only wear my hair in a ponytail with a knitted hat over it. And I did every day for the past year. I need for my hair to be wild and natural.
I feel free of the old energy my sad, mangled hair represented. Again, I've been witness to the growth of many individuals in my life, and I felt ready for my own progression. I only hope that people get I have not sold out, I've bought in. I am investing in the new, healthy me. With a more lush, full head of hippy hair.
I still look forward to reading this tribe's posts and admiring my other tribe members. I just wanted to make known I may look differnt, but the difference is only superficial. I still think long hair is beautiful. Just not on me, not right now. Peaceout, beautiful brothers and sisters.

Statement of Peace and Freedom Party Senate Candidate Marsha Feinland:

In the United States, the institution of marriage controls our right to such matters as child custody, hospital visitation, and retirement income. It is also the most common and socially accepted form of a committed relationship between two adults. To deprive any couple of the right to marry is discrimination. We cannot allow discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, just as we no longer allow "miscegenation" laws to prohibit interracial marriage.

As the U.S. Senate takes up a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in time for preelection posturing by the right wing, we should study the poses assumed by the two senators from California. Both Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer were opposed to gay marriages in San Francisco when they were briefly legalized. This time, we will probably see them pointing out that the proposed amendment is "unnecessary," "inappropriate," or "not the business of the federal government."

My position is that a constitutional amendment or any law banning gay marriage is unjust, discriminatory and absolutely wrong. As long as the institution exists, everyone has the right to marry.

The following is a letter of protest sent to the Santa Cruz City Council for the police assault of Shane (Tammy) Maxfield.

Santa Cruz City Council,

I am writing to protest the assault and false arrest carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield by Santa Cruz Police Officer Brierly. A description of that arrest from an eyewitness follows this letter.

You as the City Council are the boss of the police and hold direct responsibility for the outrageous violations of civil liberties that are routinely carried out by your police department.

Yours is a police a department that has been successfully sued for its violations of free speech rights, a department that has violently broken up a protest against the war in Yugoslavia, a department that purposely targets activists for harassment, brutality and false arrests, a department that murdered activist John Dine in cold blood, a department that has been caught spying on and infiltrating anti-war organizations, a department that purposely targets the poorest of the poor for harassment, brutality and false arrests under the direct orders of the anti-homeless laws that you as a City Council have passed, a police department that targeted the Blue Lagoon, a gay bar, for special homophobic treatment eventually costing the City in a settlement of well over a million dollars.

The homophobic hate crime that Officer Brierly has now carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield is just one in a long list of crimes carried out by your police department. Your encouragement of past crimes has led directly to this most recent one. The Santa Cruz Police department is sending out a strong message that Santa Cruz is not safe for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community and that the City no longer wants their tourism dollars.

I demand that Officer Brierly be immediately fired from the police force for his hate crime against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield and that Officer Brierly be jailed on the charge of felony assault for his criminal violence and reckless endangerment of the life of a person suffering with HIV/AIDS.

Sincerely, Steven Argue
District Attorney Bob Lee: May 3, 2006

I am a witness in the case of Shane(Tammy) Maxfield, case #065-04163. Shane was handcuffed and forced to sit down against the chainlink fence on Pacific Ave/Church for "directing traffic." He was actually helping a friend and another witness, David Bliss jump David's battery to move his van out of the handicapped space.

The officer refused to give me his name and badge number. I begged him twice not to arrest Shane as he is severely ill with AIDS and has just started a dibilitating HIV cocktail of Trevada and Sustiva. He laughed at me and said "That's not gonna happen." I told him Shane might die of stress in jail and he guffawed and shrugged me off.

It was apparent the officer realized he hadn't charged Shane with anything yet as he pulled Shane up by his coat, slammed him against the fence and forced the top of Shane's head to barely touch him. He said: "Now I've got you for battery." This was in full public view of at least 40 witnesses at 1 PM on April 25,2006. Before the sergeant could take stories from witnesses Shane was put in the police car and taken to jail. His arraignment is May 15, 2006. The jail personnel were sympathetic and thought the whole incident ridiculous.

It is a travesty of justice to allow a police officer with NO communication skills arrest a severely ill man for helping a friend (the van was already jumped and ready to go when the arresting officer on the beat got there) This officer should be removed from the police force as he is nothing more than a thug in a uniform. He is guilty of police brutality, false arrest and battery upon Shane not the other way around.

They all had short hair, and one looked like Elvis. SACRILEGE! The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence throw their anniversary party/commemoration, and bestow sainthood on various people on Easter each year in San Francisco's Dolores Park. Along with that they hold a Jesus look-alike contest. It's a hoot. It would be good -- GREAT -- to get better quality contestants than last year. This is why I'm mentioning this now, even though Easter is more than a month away. Easter this year will be Sunday, April 16.

So, if you'd like to be a contestant, start thinking about your outfits now. How big will your stigmatas be? What kind of robe goes well with a crown of thorns?
My issue for the last two years has been not "How are we going to win when so many of us vote againts there self interest?"

My question has been;
"Why is the Queer Left Leadership so uninspiring?"

LAst week on election Day I started a series on my radio show about that question.

How about ya'll? Why is the Left in general and the Queer Left Specificly so uninspiring to me?

Generation Q can be heard Tuesday from 4:PM till 6:PM on http://www.nj.com/wrsu
and on the air on 88.7 FM WRSU
Though this may be the wrong place to post!?!?!?

Friends, Friends and more friends. Now i am not shy, but i am fairly new to this whole networking and bulleton board posting thing. I would like to meet all kinds of people from all over the place. I travel allot and like to know people wherever i go. BUT, in most cases, i probably would not message or add someone first. So if you check out my prof. and dig it let me know, i would love to have new friends to chat with.

Here's what i am looking for in my dating circle...though nothing is set in stone it will give you an idea of what I look out for... ;-)

BOYS (18-35-maturity is more important than age but also must like to play once in a while)who are interested in making new friends, chatting, hooking up for long conversations over POTS of coffee, online boughts of insanity, or partying like rockstars. Goth,Punk,Long hair, Hippiy, all pluses but i never judge a book by its cover. My job has me traveling allot at the moment but ideally i am looking for a LTR with the specail someone (man)
